In northeastern British Columbia, a mass shooting occurred at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, resulting in at least 10 deaths, including the suspected shooter, which officials characterize as a profoundly disturbing tragedy for the small community.
The RCMP issued an emergency alert on Tuesday afternoon following reports of an active shooter at the school, which serves students in Grades 7 through 12. Upon entering the building, officers discovered six fatalities. Two additional victims were located at another site, and another individual succumbed to injuries while being transported to hospital. The suspect believed to be responsible was also found deceased with an apparent self-inflicted injury.
Police initially described the suspect as a female wearing a dress with brown hair. In an updated release, RCMP said the original suspect was believed to have been located deceased. Investigators continue working to determine whether a second suspect may have been involved and to confirm the total number of victims.
Two people were transported by air ambulance to hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries, while roughly 25 others were evaluated and treated for non-life-threatening injuries at the local medical centre. BC Emergency Health Services responded alongside STARS Air Ambulance, which transported critically injured patients to hospital in Edmonton.
A lockdown was implemented at both Tumbler Ridge Secondary and Tumbler Ridge Elementary schools before being lifted later in the afternoon, allowing students to be released to their families.
According to local officials, the community is experiencing profound shock and grief as support services are provided. Authorities are urging residents to consult official sources for updates as the investigation continues.
